Fall Hiking in Öfingen: Haus Mohnblume—A Place of Refuge

The Mohnblume House in the Öfingen vacation village is located right on the Himmelbergrunde gourmet trail and offers hikers access to the Black Forest and the Swabian Alb.

Cooler temperatures, crisp air, and forests ablaze with autumn colors cast the Baar-Alb in a special light in October: While the region’s river valleys are often still shrouded in fog in the morning, the sun is already warming the slopes of the vacation village of Öfingen. On the south-southeast-facing slope of this district—known as the “Sun Village of the Baar”—lies Haus Mohnblume, situated at the geographical junction between the eastern Black Forest and the Swabian Alb, and thus at the heart of a diverse hiking area for hiking vacationers.

Hiking Right from Your Front Door

Hikes can begin right on your doorstep. The trail to the certified Black Forest “Himmelbergrunde” trail starts in the vacation village of Öfingen: a roughly 10.3-kilometer-long, moderately difficult hike with an elevation gain of about 220 meters, which winds through autumnal, colorful hedgerow landscapes up to the 941-meter-high Himmelberg and, weather permitting, offers sweeping views over the sea of fog in the valleys.

For a more challenging hike, the Lupfen near Talheim—considered the “King of the Baar”—is a great choice. This forested hill marks the transition to the Swabian Alb and can be reached in just a few minutes by car or via a direct hiking trail along the Himmelberg ridges. At an elevation of 977 meters, the wooden Lupfen Tower offers a 360-degree panoramic view of the Baar Plateau and the Black Forest ridge.

Other places to visit in the region

Other destinations are within easy reach: In just under half an hour by car, hikers can reach the Upper Danube Valley with its “DonauWellen” premium trails, which wind along steep limestone cliffs and offer views of the meandering Danube. To the west lies the Black Forest with the Wutach Gorge, Germany’s largest canyon; to the east, the Swabian Alb with the striking Albtrauf escarpment surrounding the Dreifaltigkeitsberg near Spaichingen, where premium trails wind through juniper heaths ablaze with autumn colors.

A place to relax after the hike

After a day of sightseeing, Haus Mohnblume offers a place to relax: This fully equipped vacation home features an open-concept living and dining area, a self-catering kitchen, and a converted attic with bedrooms for four to six people. The vacation village is designed to be traffic-calmed and features a playground; dogs are also welcome in the building. From the private sun terrace, you can enjoy the view of the autumn landscape at sunset.
